How to compress an image to 50KB
If a form says “maximum photo size 50KB,” the safest approach is to check the actual file size after each conversion rather than guessing from how large the image looks on screen.
Compress your photo to 50KB in four steps
- Open the CompressKBNow image compressor and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image (up to 30MB).
- Click the 50KB preset, or enter 50 in the target-size field.
- Choose your output format: JPG for common photo forms, WebP when supported, or PNG when transparency matters. Auto keeps JPG inputs as JPG and selects WebP for PNG/WebP inputs.
- Click Compress image. Review the file size, pixel dimensions and preview, then download the result.
Tip: “50KB” generally means an upper limit, not an exact required size. A 46KB image may be fine if the receiving portal accepts files under 50KB, but check the portal's separate format and dimensions requirements.
What happens if the image is still over 50KB?
Some large or detailed photos cannot be reduced enough at their original resolution. The tool searches through quality and image dimensions; it may show “Best effort” when it cannot reach the chosen limit. Try WebP if the receiving website accepts it, crop unnecessary background before uploading, or choose a larger target where permitted.
Why does my picture look different?
Smaller file sizes require some combination of more efficient encoding, lower quality, and sometimes fewer pixels. Thin text, small faces and sharp edges may become blurry at strict size limits. Always view the downloaded image at its intended size.
Common mistakes when submitting compressed images
- Uploading WebP to a portal that accepts JPG only.
- Assuming a small file size means the correct pixel dimensions.
- Using a compressed result without checking readability.
- Sending an image with a transparent background to JPG and expecting it to stay transparent. JPG export uses white instead.
What if you need 20KB or 100KB?
Use the 20KB or 100KB preset on the same compressor. A 20KB target is more restrictive and may shrink dimensions substantially. A 100KB target often leaves more visible detail, depending on the source image.
